What you will learn each week:
Week 1 - Foundations of Artistic Growth
(Essential for First Time Attendees)
Week 1 establishes the foundation that the 3 Week Intensive builds on. You’ll focus on design and composition, and color mixing—learning how to simplify what you see and translate it into stronger work.
You'll leave Week 1 with:
- A clearer visual process
- Better control of Color Mixing and Values
- Fewer guesses and stronger first passes
- A solid foundation for both studio and outdoor work
Week 2 - Working En Plein Air
Week 2 shifts to plein air painting. Working on location, you’ll learn how to handle the effects of changing light, simplifying complex scenes, and dealing with time pressure—without losing structure or confidence. Emphasis is placed on simplification, strong decisions, and completing meaningful studies on site.
You'll leave Week 2 with:
- A practical approach to plein air painting
- Stronger decision-making under real conditions
- Improved ability to simplify complex outdoor scenes
- Greater confidence working outside the studio
(Plein air sessions are planned with accessibility and logistics in mind)
Week 3 - Studio Painting
Week 3 is about taking what you’ve learned and preparing it for the gallery. John will guide you through the decisions that move a piece from a strong start to a finished painting suitable for exhibition.
You'll leave Week 3 with:
- A clear process for refining your pieces in the studio
- Knowing how to develop larger, more finished paintings
- Better judgment about scale, finish, and presentation
- A stronger understanding of what makes work gallery-ready
